Ten Reasons People Give for Avoiding SLS in Soaps and Shampoos
  1. SLS is a skin irritant, widely used to irritate skin in order to test products used to heal skin conditions.
  2. SLS is actually a pesticide and herbicide commonly used to dehydrate and kill insects and plants.
  3. SLS was denied approval as a pesticide for organic gardening due to its polluting properties and environmental damage. SLS pollutes groundwater, is toxic to fish and can bioaccumulate in the bodies of fish and other aquatic animals.
  4. Toxic Sodium Oxides and Sulfur Oxides are released when SLS is heated.
  5. SLS is corrosive to the fats and proteins that make up skin and muscle, according to the American College of Toxicity.
  6. SLS has the potential for long-term permeation of cells and tissues of the eyes, brain, heart, and liver.
  7. It is an eye irritant linked to cataracts in adults, and inhibiting the proper formation of eyes in small children.
  8. May contain traces of nitrates and toxic solvents used in its manufacturing process.
  9. The SLS manufacturing process is highly polluting.
  10. SLS is penetration enhancer that helps other chemicals cross the membranes of your body’s cells.

Q:  How does CULT+KING WASH make suds if it doesn’t have SLS?

A:  WASH is made through the process of saponification of oils, which is the way that true soap is made and has always been made. And true soap makes suds.  If a shampoo bar is not made through saponification, SLS has to be added to make suds.  This is what the traditional shampoos in plastic bottles are all about.  Typically all the oils are saponified into the bar during the soap-making process unless the bar is “super-fatted.”  WASH is “super-fatted,” meaning there are extra oils added over and above what are used in the saponification process. The extra oils actually create their own mild, smooth lather, which is soft on skin, scalp and hair.

Q:  You say that WASH is cold-processed.  What does that mean?
A:  That means that instead of heating it up to 300 degrees in the soap-making process (boiling starts at 220 degrees), we only heat it up to 110 degrees so the heat doesn’t kill the botanicals.  Heating soap to that high a temperature is like taking a beautiful organic meal and putting it in the microwave for 30 minutes.  Our WASH is like eating that meal raw.
Q:  Is the palm oil in WASH sustainably-sourced?
A:  Our organic palm oil is certified by the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (ROSP). We are appalled and heartbroken by the conditions created by the irresponsible harvesting of palm oil around the world, but the efficacy of palm oil means its use will continue. Perhaps if we help to grow and encourage sustainable palm oil sources, we can move towards a better future. That is our hope and intention.
Q:  Why is WASH shampoo bar not recommended for color treated hair? Will it pull out color or will it just not help color last?
A:   The process of real soap results in a pH of about 9, which makes it great for cleaning. But the higher the pH, the more color that is pulled from the hair. All our other products sit at 4.5 pH which is where skin and hair fall. Shampoos marketed as “color-safe” typically include synthetic detergent to lower their pH. Though a lot of other companies don’t mention it, we want to be completely transparent about what is and isn’t in our products. If you do have color-treated hair, WASH is still amazing for your face, body and shaving. The best real soap you can buy.

I absolutely love the scent, feel, and high quality ingredients of this bar. I initially ordered it with the intention of using it for my long hair, which I wash every 7-10 days or so. Unfortunately, the bar leaves my hair feeling waxy and heavy, like it hasn’t been fully rinsed out even when it has. I tried it for a month before deciding to look for another non-toxic hair wash. The bar also wasn’t ideal for my face because it left my skin feeling a bit tight and dry. I still give WASH 4 stars though, because I use it to clean my entire body in the shower and it has been great for tattoo aftercare. And I just love the smell.

  2. Bobby Small (verified owner)

This soap is my most favorite. Makes my skin and hair feel amazing and I think my body is happy that I am using it. And from a guy’s prospective, it is fast and efficient. One bar. Not needing some perfumed body wash, scented bar soap, shampoo and then conditioner all making a mess and clogging up your pores. Who needs that? Not me.
I thank you for making this product available.

  3. Zoe Kubachka

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I love this bar! I’ve used other shampoo bars in the past, and this is definitely my favorite. Feels great on my long curly hair (and it has seemed to helped my dandruff). I also love it on my face and as body wash. 1 million stars!

  4. Natalie

I have fine wavy hair and have a hard time finding anything that doesn’t leave it flat or dried out and frizzy. This has been amazing. My hair has volume without looking fried, my natural waves are enhanced, my hair never looks greasy, and I love the scent.

  5. kelsea De Filippis (verified owner)

I was skeptical at first how I would use a bar as shampoo but it is so easy, just rub in your hands or directly on your hair and it lathers really easily. A little goes a long way too. I noticed after I washed and rinsed it, my hair felt ‘waxy’ like I read in another review… HOWEVER! It feels completely normal getting out of the shower and drying. I paired this with the Tonik and Jelly and my hair feels so healthy and amazing. I have sensitive skin and I did not react at all! Love this product!!

  6. Ashley Ronning (verified owner)

I got this as a free sample from Jax garage in Vancouver, and just came back to order more. This was my first shampoo bar, and I loved it. It lathers wonderfully even after a super sweaty run, and works so well on my fine wavy hair. I use it on my kiddos as well who have fine curly hair. It does leave my hair feeling, quite literally, squeaky clean after washing, but dries wonderfully. Myself and my kids suffer from extremely sensitive skin and break out in rashes super easily, but not with this! Love the simplicity of the shampoo bar that me and my kiddos can use so I don’t have endless bottles cluttering my shower. I also use the jelly and balm. So happy I was given the travel sized bar as a sample cuz its just really been a game changer for me and my family!

Gorgeous bar of goodness that I trust to cleanse and beautify my face. Truly, it is the best facial cleanser I have ever used (and that’s saying something as a former beauty editor). Insanely effective and gorgeous. Pair it with the Balm and you’re set for life. x
